Competence functions here as something close to an ethical category: incompetence is not merely inconvenient, it is a kind of dishonesty, a refusal to meet reality on its actual terms. Long-horizon pattern recognition is the signature capability - the ability to see, often years ahead, where a current trajectory is going to fail and to redesign accordingly. They are exceptionally good at building systems that scale, at separating signal from noise in complex domains, and at making decisions under uncertainty without requiring the emotional comfort of group agreement. Independence of judgment allows them to hold unpopular but correct positions long enough for reality to vindicate them. Communication is precise, compressed, and oriented toward conclusion. They edit aggressively before speaking, which is sometimes mistaken for hesitation but is in fact compression. They prefer written exchange for anything substantive because writing permits the structural rigor speech does not. The deeper task is learning to relax the grip of certainty without losing the capacity for conviction, and to extend toward others the same patient revision they extend toward their own ideas.
